| The 1966 GTO was larger and heavier than the 1965. For the first time the GTO was a separate model. Pontiac used plastic for the first time on the grille. The split grille was similar to the 1965 grille except that the grille openings tapered at the top and bottom. The turning lamps were moved next to the headlights. In 1966 a Pontiac crest was added to the front center of the hood. All GTO's featured a pinstripe, extended rocker panel mouldings and wheelwell mouldings. The dash panel was redesigned and featured four pods. A vinyl-trimmed assist bar was located above the glovebox with a GTO emblem located to its left. Wood veneer covered the instrument panel. Engine availability was unchanged apart from the larger center carburetor on Tri-Power models. The option for the larger center carburetor (XS engine) included the Air Scoop package and a revised camshaft. This was the first Ram Air engine. |
