| In 1968 Pontiac completely redesigned the GTO. The first change you will notice is the front bumper. For the first time the GTO came standard with a painted bumper. However, Pontiac offered a conventional chrome bumper as an option. The hood had two simulated scoops. A GTO emblem was inserted on the left front grille opening and on the right rear of the deck lid. The GTO fender emblems were replaced with decals. In the interior the instrument panel had three pods. Simulated wood appliqué was used on the instrument panel. The standard engine was the 400 ci V8 rated at 350 hp. The 400 HO with 350 hp, was the first performance engine option, followed by the 400 Ram Air engine. In March of 1968 the Ram Air engine was replaced by the Ram Air II engine. The Ram Air II came with forged pistons , a forged steel camshaft, and new cylinder heads that featured round exhaust ports. Regarding the exhaust, automatic GTOs got 2 inch tail pipes while manual GTOs had 2.25 inch tail pipes. Also Pontiac made an industry wide move, relocating the VIN plate to the left front of the dash pane. |
